The Anambra State Government has dismissed eight vigilante operatives for assaulting and stripping a serving female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Miss Edema Jennifer Elobor, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Special Adviser on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, announced the decision in Awka on Wednesday, August 20.
He said the state government had also settled the victim’s medical bills, replaced her damaged belongings, and issued a public apology to her family and the NYSC.
Emeakayi explained that the dismissed operatives, members of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi (Agunechemba Vigilante Group), acted outside their mandate while claiming to be chasing suspected cultists. They will be handed over to the police for prosecution.
“The Soludo administration will not tolerate any form of unprofessionalism, brutality, or abuse of office by security operatives. Any officer found guilty of misconduct will face immediate dismissal and prosecution,” Emeakayi stated.
The disciplinary action followed a viral video, recorded on July 23 and widely circulated on August 19, showing the vigilante operatives beating and stripping the corps member despite her presenting a valid NYSC identification card.
The footage sparked widespread outrage, prompting swift government intervention.
