Fight Erupts in Mexican Senate Between Chamber President and Opposition Leader (Video)

A heated brawl broke out in the Mexican Senate on Wednesday, August 27, involving Senate president Gerardo Fernández Noroña of the ruling Morena party and opposition leader Alejandro “Alito” Moreno, head of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

The clash erupted as the session was drawing to a close, during the singing of the national anthem. Tensions flared after Moreno approached Fernández Noroña, demanding to be allowed to speak. In a livestreamed video, Moreno can be seen grabbing the Senate president’s arm while repeatedly insisting, “I’m asking you to let me speak.” Fernández Noroña responded, “Don’t touch me.” Moments later, pushing and shouting ensued, with Moreno knocking over a photographer in the scuffle.

Another lawmaker also jumped into the fray, attempting to strike Fernández Noroña as he tried to move away.

Fernández Noroña later told reporters the altercation followed a “difficult debate” over the presence of foreign armed forces in Mexico. He accused Moreno of assaulting him, saying: “He started pulling on me, touching me, pushing. He hit me and threatened, ‘I’m going to beat you up, I’m going to kill you.’”

In response, Fernández Noroña announced he would convene an emergency session on Friday and propose the expulsion of Moreno and three other PRI lawmakers involved in the incident.
