Tensions between the U.S. and Russia intensified after former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a stark warning in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks cautioning Moscow to “watch its words.”
Trump had publicly criticized Medvedev on social media following provocative statements the Russian official shared on Telegram. In his post, Medvedev referred to Russia’s Cold War-era “Dead Hand” system—a controversial automatic nuclear retaliation mechanism designed to launch missiles even if the country’s leadership is eliminated in a first strike.
Medvedev stated:
“If the words of a former Russian president cause such a nervous reaction from the formidable U.S. President, then Russia is clearly on the right path and will continue forward. Regarding his remarks about our ‘dead economy’ and ‘dangerous territory’—he should remember his favorite zombie films and consider how dangerous a ‘dead hand’ can be, even if it’s supposed to be inactive.”
Trump fired back on his platform Truth Social, saying:
“Tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia who still pretends to be in charge, to watch his words. He is treading on very dangerous ground.”
This exchange followed Trump’s announcement in Scotland, alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, that he intends to set a 10-to-12-day deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, emphasizing that further delays are unacceptable:
“There’s no reason to wait.”
Medvedev, who served as Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012 and now holds the position of deputy chair of the Security Council, also mocked Trump by comparing him to President Joe Biden, saying Trump was “headed down the Sleepy Joe road.”
The sharp rhetoric adds further volatility to the already tense U.S.-Russia relationship, as the conflict in Ukraine persists and diplomatic solutions remain elusive.
