Moscow Warns West: Excluding Russia From Ukraine Peace Talks a “Road to Nowhere”

Russia has cautioned Western leaders that any attempt to resolve Ukraine’s security crisis without Moscow’s participation amounts to a “road to nowhere.”

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking on Wednesday, insisted that Russia must be included in discussions on collective security.
“We cannot agree with proposals to resolve questions of collective security without the Russian Federation. This will not work,” he said.

Lavrov added that the United States and its allies “understand perfectly well that seriously discussing security issues without Russia is a utopia — it’s a road to nowhere.”

His remarks followed a high-level meeting in Washington, where US President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders to discuss potential security guarantees for Kyiv. The comments also came just days after Trump’s separate talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Trump is attempting to broker a settlement more than three years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, though sharp divisions persist. Lavrov stressed that any eventual summit between Putin and Zelenskyy must be “meticulously prepared” to prevent further escalation. He also accused European leaders of making “clumsy attempts” to sway Trump, saying they offered “no constructive ideas.”

Meanwhile, NATO military chiefs convened on Wednesday to weigh possible security guarantees for Ukraine, as a coalition of 30 nations — including European countries, Japan, and Australia — works on a framework to support a potential peace deal.

Trump has ruled out deploying US troops to Ukraine, while Russia has repeatedly said it would reject any NATO presence there.

Tensions rose further after Poland reported that an object resembling a Russian-made Shahed drone landed in a cornfield in its eastern region overnight, which Warsaw described as a “provocation” amid the ongoing peace discussions.
