FG to Relocate Cattle from Abuja to Designated Grazing Reserves

The Federal Government has announced plans to accelerate the relocation of cattle from Abuja to designated grazing reserves in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Minister of Livestock Development, Dr. Idi Maiha, revealed this on Tuesday, September 16, during the 2025 Media Retreat in Kaduna, themed “Driving Livestock Growth through Strategic Communication.”

Maiha also disclosed that the ministry will soon launch a national peace campaign aimed at ending farmer-herder conflicts across the country.

“In a few weeks, we will roll out a national peace initiative to foster sustainable harmony between farmers, herders, organized groups, and local communities,” he said. “Last Friday, we engaged with the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) as part of efforts to move animals roaming Abuja’s city center to grazing reserves. We need peace, and we must give ourselves peace.”

The minister emphasized that strong collaboration with state governments is essential to ensure lasting peace, highlighting that rural stability is vital for food security, job creation, and national stability.

“We cannot keep losing members of our armed forces to criminal elements. We are working with security agencies to silence the guns. Our goal is a nation with truckloads of milk, not armored vehicles. Milking machines should replace machine guns,” Maiha added.

He further noted that the livestock sector is a major driver of wealth creation, employment, food security, and rural development, stressing that the ministry’s priority over the next five years is to implement policies, programs, and projects that will strengthen the sector.
