Five law enforcement officers were shot Wednesday afternoon, September 17, while serving a warrant in York County, Pennsylvania.
According to officials, three officers from the Northern York Regional Police Department are in grave condition, while a fourth officer from the same department remains in critical condition. A deputy from the York County Sheriff’s Office was also injured.
The suspect is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, sources said.
The incident began around 2:10 p.m. in North Codorus Township, according to Ted Czech of the York County Office of Emergency Management. Pennsylvania State Police have since taken over the investigation.
A heavy police presence was reported at the scene, and a medical helicopter was spotted leaving the area. WellSpan York Hospital confirmed it was treating two individuals connected to the shooting, both listed in serious condition. The hospital said it had activated “enhanced security protocols.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted on X that he had been briefed and was traveling to York County. “I’ve been briefed on the situation involving law enforcement in York County, and am on my way there now,” he wrote.
Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and Attorney General Dave Sunday also urged residents to stay clear of the area and offered prayers for those affected.
The Spring Grove Area School District was placed on lockdown under a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted just before 5 p.m.
