On Monday, September 15, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he is filing a $15 billion defamation and libel lawsuit against the New York Times.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated: “The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!” He added that the lawsuit would be filed in Florida.
Trump described the newspaper as a “virtual ‘mouthpiece’ for the Radical Left Democrat Party,” accusing it of spreading falsehoods about his family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and the nation, though he provided no evidence to substantiate these claims.
The announcement follows recent reports that Trump threatened legal action over New York Times articles about a lewd birthday note allegedly given to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which Trump has denied writing.
This is not Trump’s first high-profile legal action against media outlets. In July, he sued media mogul Rupert Murdoch and The Wall Street Journal for at least $10 billion over an article about his friendship with Epstein.
That same month, he reached a $16 million settlement with Paramount over CBS News’ 60 Minutes coverage of the 2024 election, alleging the program deceptively edited an interview with his rival Kamala Harris.
