Dangote Cement Plant, Obajana, has launched its 2025 Sustainability Week, featuring a dynamic lineup of activities focused on sports, education, and community partnership under the theme: “Sustainable Progress: Celebrating Growth and Partnerships.”
The annual event, which began on October 24, has been expanded this year to include a wider array of programs aimed at promoting holistic community development, the company stated on Wednesday.
The opening ceremony set the tone for a week of engagement and collaboration, drawing participants from both Dangote Cement employees and surrounding host communities. A key highlight was a football tournament designed to foster teamwork and friendly competition.
The tournament concluded on October 29 at the Obajana Academy Field, with the Oyo Community Football Team clinching the championship following a thrilling 1–0 victory over Dangote Cement Transport. The event featured several days of competitive matches involving teams from the Obajana Plant, Dangote Cement Transport, and host communities.
Beyond promoting physical wellness, the football tournament aimed to strengthen ties between employees and community members, fostering mutual respect, unity, and camaraderie. The final match attracted a lively crowd, including senior management such as Plant Director Azad Nawabuddin, CGM Maintenance Panjala Sreedar, CGM Production John Gwong, and GM Special Duties Ademola Adeyemi.
The ceremony drew praise from participants and guests alike, who lauded the initiative for reinforcing Dangote Cement’s core values of collaboration, inclusion, and sustainable community development.
Complementing the sporting events, an Inter-School Spelling Bee and Quiz Competition engaged ten secondary schools from the host communities, providing young learners with a platform to showcase academic talent and intellectual curiosity. After several rounds, Golden Vessels Academy, Obajana, emerged as the Spelling Bee champion, underscoring the company’s commitment to nurturing education and encouraging academic excellence among youth.
Speaking at the launch, Plant Director Azad Nawabuddin highlighted the rationale behind the expanded programming:
"Our investment in sports infrastructure and initiatives reflects a commitment to the holistic well-being of our community. The football tournament goes beyond entertainment—it builds character, teaches life lessons, and strengthens bonds between our organization and the communities we serve. These relationships, forged on the playing field, extend to all areas of our community engagement."
Head of HAM-Admin/HR, Peter Agba, emphasized the company’s integrated approach:
"By combining sports and educational initiatives like the Spelling Bee, we aim to nurture both the physical and intellectual capabilities of our community members. Engaging youth through sports while stimulating their minds academically lays the foundation for sustainable community growth and empowerment."
The successful launch of the 2025 Sustainability Week paves the way for upcoming events, including environmental programs, health awareness campaigns, and skills development workshops. The expanded agenda reflects Dangote Cement’s evolving approach to sustainability, recognizing the interconnected importance of physical health, mental well-being, education, and environmental stewardship.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to year-round community engagement through quarterly sporting events and ongoing educational initiatives, ensuring that empowerment remains a continuous effort rather than a one-time celebration.
Through its integration of sports and education into its sustainability framework, Dangote Cement continues to demonstrate how businesses can foster unity, nurture talent, and create lasting social impact in the communities where they operate.
