FG Releases ₦2.3bn to Universities to Clear Outstanding Arrears After ASUU Suspends Warning Strike

The Federal Government has released ₦2.31 billion to federal universities to settle outstanding arrears owed to academic and non-academic staff.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 30, by Kamorudeen Yusuf, Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed that the funds were processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, with payments to universities set to begin immediately.

Dr. Alausa reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to transparent and sustainable reforms aimed at ensuring staff welfare and financial stability in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

He added that the government is finalising the release of third-party deductions and pension remittances to the Nigerian University Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO).

According to the minister, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) will be fully incorporated into university salary structures by 2026, ensuring consistent and timely payments. He also noted that funding for the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities Project has been maintained.

Alausa stressed that all ongoing engagements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other unions are being held in good faith, with agreements designed to stay within realistic budgetary limits to safeguard stability in the education sector.

The disbursement follows ASUU’s recent decision to suspend its two-week warning strike after renewed negotiations with the Federal Government.
