Legal practitioner Liborous Oshoma has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to move beyond merely defending election petitions and take action against electoral offenders.
Speaking on Arise Television on Wednesday, as monitored by DAILY POST, Oshoma emphasized that INEC can only fulfill its pledge to reduce courtroom battles over elections by enforcing transparency and prosecuting those who violate electoral laws.
He welcomed the recent commitment by the INEC Chairman to make elections credible and less litigious, but stressed that good intentions must translate into concrete action.
“Everyone wants a Nigeria where elections are decided by the people, not the courts. We want the day when INEC announces results and all parties accept them peacefully,” Oshoma said. “However, this must go beyond rhetoric. Similar promises have been made by previous chairmen.”
