Former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has said that federalism remains the most effective framework for managing Nigeria’s diverse population.
Agbakoba made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, as reported by DAILY POST.
“Nothing has changed. I continue to say what I have always said. Given the way we are structured, with our diverse ethnicities, federalism is the system that works best for us,” he stated.
He added, “Unless we provide space for the regional ethnicities and grant them autonomy within the Nigerian federal system, it’s unlikely we will make significant progress.”
Agbakoba also commented on the pace of constitutional reforms, noting, “Over the past 25 years, the National Assembly has been implementing changes very slowly. Even though more than 80 amendments have been passed this year alone, their impact is still limited.”
