Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez was involved in a tragic road accident on his way to training, striking and killing an 81-year-old man.
Reports indicate that the elderly man suffered a medical episode just before the collision, preventing him from moving out of the path of traffic.
According to Italian media, Martinez, 27, was driving to training on Tuesday morning, October 28, when he hit the man, who was in an electric wheelchair, at around 9:40 a.m. The accident occurred on Via Bergamo in Fenegro, in the province of Como, near Inter’s Appiano Gentile training complex.
Martinez, who was unharmed but reportedly shaken by the incident, stopped immediately and attempted to administer first aid. Despite the rapid response of both an ambulance and an air ambulance, the elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Italian police have launched an investigation into the incident. Following the news, Inter Milan cancelled manager Cristian Chivu’s press conference, originally scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Serie A giants are set to face Fiorentina at San Siro on Wednesday, October 29. Martinez, currently Inter’s second-choice goalkeeper, was on the bench during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Napoli.
