The White House announced on Tuesday, October 21, that there are currently no plans for U.S. President Donald Trump to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reversing Trump’s earlier statement suggesting an upcoming meeting in Budapest to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
Last week, Trump had indicated that a meeting with Putin was imminent, following what he described as constructive communications between senior American and Russian officials. According to a White House source, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey V. Lavrov held a “productive call” to lay the groundwork for further discussions.
Trump had originally mentioned that he hoped to meet with Putin “in about two weeks or so” to explore possible steps toward peace, even naming Budapest as a potential venue. The proposal drew significant international attention, as such a meeting could have marked a major diplomatic move toward de-escalation.
However, the recent clarification from the White House indicates that no immediate meeting is scheduled. It remains uncertain whether discussions about a future Trump-Putin summit in Budapest will continue.
The cancellation marks a notable shift in diplomatic tone, signaling that high-level dialogue between Washington and Moscow on the Ukraine conflict may not happen as soon as previously expected.
