Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has revealed that three additional governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are on the verge of defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), deepening the opposition party’s internal crisis.
Fayose made the disclosure on Wednesday, October 15, during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme. His comments followed the recent resignation of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri from the PDP.
According to the outspoken former governor, the wave of defections is far from over and could soon leave the PDP with only five governors.
“Let me tell you, there are three more governors that will leave soon. There will be five remaining. One of them will still struggle to get the ticket, and they all know that the ticket is just an ordinary tissue paper,” Fayose said.
He accused some PDP governors of undermining the party from within due to their desire to control its structure.
“They are killing the party because they all want to control it. That’s exactly what happened in 2023,” he added.
Fayose also rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu was influencing opposition governors to join the APC, insisting that the defections were driven by personal ambition and political survival.
“President Tinubu should not be blamed for PDP’s problems. The PDP is sick — perpetually sick — and there’s no cure in sight,” he stated.
He maintained that the party’s downfall was largely self-inflicted, caused by internal sabotage.
“Those who killed the party know themselves. There’s a big difference between a former governor and a sitting governor,” Fayose noted.
While confirming that he remains a member of the PDP, Fayose distanced himself from efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis, saying the party’s current leadership must take responsibility for its decline.
His remarks come amid growing concern over the PDP’s dwindling influence, following recent defections of governors from Enugu, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States to the APC.
