WAFCON 2026 Qualifier: Super Falcons Defeat Benin’s Amazons in Lomé

Nigeria’s Super Falcons began their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in style, defeating the Amazons of Benin Republic 2–0 in the first leg played on Friday night in Lomé.

Goals from Chiwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo sealed the win for the reigning African champions.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade nearly put Nigeria ahead in the 7th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar. Moments later, Folashade Ijamilusi was denied by a last-minute defensive clearance.

The Falcons finally broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when Ihezuo lifted the ball over the Benin goalkeeper after a precise assist from Deborah Abiodun.

Benin almost equalised in the 35th minute, but Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a brilliant save to keep the lead intact.

Just before halftime, Okoronkwo doubled Nigeria’s advantage with a composed finish, again assisted by Abiodun.

Despite maintaining control in the second half, the Super Falcons were unable to add to their tally, ending the match 2–0.

The return leg is scheduled for Tuesday at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.
