England successfully defended their Women’s Euro crown by defeating Spain 3-1 on penalties in a tense final on Sunday, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The dramatic shootout saw Chloe Kelly net the winning penalty, while Spain faltered under pressure — with three of their spot-kicks missed, including one from Ballon d’Or holder Aitana Bonmati.
Earlier in the match at St Jakob-Park in Basel, Mariona Caldentey gave Spain the lead with a well-timed header, echoing their triumph over England in the 2023 World Cup final.
However, England responded through Alessia Russo, who leveled the score shortly after the break to force extra time and ultimately, penalties. The victory marks England's back-to-back Euro titles and a moment of redemption against their World Cup rivals.
