Israeli Strike on Southern Lebanon Kills Three

The Lebanese health ministry reported that three people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday, despite an ongoing ceasefire. The strikes targeted the Tyre district, a flashpoint in the tense border region.

According to the ministry, an Israeli drone strike hit a vehicle in the Tyre area, killing one individual. The Israeli military confirmed the attack, stating that it had “struck and eliminated” a Hezbollah commander involved in efforts to rebuild the group’s operations near Bint Jbeil, close to the Lebanese-Israeli border. The exact location of this strike was not specified.

Later, another Israeli strike in the Tyre district, this time in the town of Debaal, reportedly killed two more people. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency indicated that a residential house was targeted during this attack.

These strikes come despite a ceasefire agreement brokered in November intended to end over a year of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which included two months of intense warfare. The ceasefire stipulated Hezbollah’s withdrawal of its fighters north of the Litani River—approximately 20 miles from the Israeli border—leaving security in the region primarily to the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers.

Israel, while officially withdrawing its troops from Lebanon under the truce, continues to maintain forces in five strategic areas it deems critical. The Israeli government has also made it clear that airstrikes will persist until Hezbollah is fully disarmed. The militant group, backed by Iran, remains a key security concern for Israel due to its significant military capabilities and ongoing hostilities.

This latest violence underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the persistent tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border, where unresolved political and security issues continue to threaten regional stability.
