The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four members accused of conspiring to impeach Speaker Aondona Dajoh.
Those suspended are Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Terna Shimawua (Kian), Cyril Ekong (Obi), and James Umoru (Apa).
The suspension, which will last six months, was announced during Friday’s plenary after Saater Tiseer, the House Majority Leader, moved a motion of urgent importance calling for disciplinary action.
Tiseer alleged that the lawmakers were attempting to destabilize the assembly with what he described as an “unnecessary crisis.” Following the resolution, Speaker Dajoh directed the sergeant-at-arms to escort the affected members out of the chamber.
The Speaker also appointed Audu Elias as the new spokesperson of the assembly, replacing Berger, one of the suspended legislators.
Just days earlier, Berger dismissed reports claiming the assembly had passed a bill banning love and romance in the state, stressing that no such legislation was under consideration.
