Emily in Paris Assistant Director Dies After Collapse During Season 5 Filming in Venice

Diego Borella, an assistant director on the popular Netflix series Emily in Paris, has died after collapsing during production of the show’s fifth season in Venice.

The 47-year-old reportedly collapsed on Thursday evening while preparations were underway for the filming of the final scene at the historic Hotel Danieli. Emergency responders arrived around 7 p.m., but despite their efforts, he could not be revived, according to Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

Borella, a respected Venetian filmmaker, had trained in Rome, London, and New York. In addition to his work in television and film, he was also a published author of fairy tales and children’s books.

Production has been suspended following his death. Filming was originally scheduled to run from August 15 to August 25, with the season expected to wrap up shortly.

Season five, set to premiere on December 18, continues Emily Cooper’s (played by Lily Collins) journey as she works at Agence Grateau in Rome. Earlier this year, Collins was spotted shooting in the Italian capital, including scenes at the Fendi store and on a scooter ride through the city.

The new storyline follows on from season four’s romantic arc with Italian character Marcello, played by Eugenio Franceschini, and marks the show’s expansion into Italy. In April, actress Camille Razat, who plays Emily’s friend Camille, confirmed her departure from the series in an emotional Instagram post.

Netflix has not yet released an official statement regarding Borella’s passing.
