Nnamdi Azikiwe University has released its findings following the death of Miss Isabella Chioma Ajana, a 100-level law student, who passed away on July 9, 2025, three days after being admitted to the school’s medical centre for complications related to diabetes.
According to her roommates at Elmada Hostel, they were unable to access their room after misplacing their key and sought assistance from the hostel mistress. However, the mistress allegedly demanded N120,000 for a spare key—requiring each of the three students to pay N40,000. Despite explaining that Ajana urgently needed her insulin medication, the mistress reportedly refused to provide immediate help.
The roommates claimed this delay worsened her health condition, ultimately leading to her death at the university medical centre.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 22, the university confirmed that the medical personnel who attended to Ajana have been suspended for three months, pending the conclusion of investigations. Their future with the institution will be determined afterward.
Regarding the hostel mistress, the university clarified that Elmada Hostel is jointly owned but privately managed. It directed the management to terminate her appointment “as a matter of urgency” and added that it would reassess its partnership with the hostel going forward.
