Fire Destroys Goods Worth Millions at Lagos’ Arena Market

A late-night fire has ravaged the popular Arena Market in Oshodi, Lagos, destroying goods worth millions of naira and leaving several traders counting heavy losses.

The blaze, which broke out around 9 p.m. on Monday, swept through multiple stalls selling electronics, spare parts, and other merchandise. Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service battled the flames with two trucks, eventually bringing the situation under control.

One of the worst-hit traders, Henry Nwankwo, said the fire wiped out his entire stock of washing machines and spare parts — including recently imported goods from China — as well as customers’ items left for repairs. His neighbour, a solar panel dealer, also lost most of his inventory.

“At least four or five other shops were affected, but the main damage was to my shop and my neighbour’s,” Nwankwo told reporters.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, witnesses suggested it could have been sparked by an electrical fault or an unattended heat source.

An onlooker praised emergency responders for their swift action, noting that firefighters attacked the blaze from multiple directions to prevent further spread.
