A head teacher and his deputy resigned from a Swansea secondary school after pupils recorded and circulated audio said to capture sexual activity from inside the head’s office.
Graham Daniels, 51, headmaster of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe, and deputy head Bethan Thomas, 37, stepped down following a complaint about the recording, which was later posted on YouTube. Governors and education officials reviewed the matter before referring it to the Education Workforce Council (EWC).
At a disciplinary hearing, both Daniels and Thomas – formally Mrs Bale – admitted to engaging in sexual acts on school premises between May 2013 and April 2014. The EWC heard they could now face sanctions ranging from a formal reprimand to removal from the teaching register.
EWC chair Jacquie Turnbull said their conduct “fell short of expected standards” and breached the professional code of conduct. Case presenter Louise Price added that the pair had knowingly behaved inappropriately over an extended period, describing their actions as “reckless and without regard for others.”
Evidence presented included testimony from pupils who reported hearing noises behind the office door, as well as a staff member who saw the pair kissing.
Despite the scandal, both teachers were described as previously well-regarded professionals who had contributed significantly to the school’s success. Union representative Tim Glover of the Association of School and College Leaders said the two had shown remorse and “acted honourably” by resigning. He noted Ysgol Bryn Tawe had achieved outstanding inspection results during their leadership.
The hearing was also told that both Daniels and Thomas remain employed in teaching roles with current employers aware of the case and having provided positive references. Thomas is on a temporary contract at Ysgol y Strade in Llanelli, while Daniels works as a supply teacher in Carmarthenshire.
The EWC panel is now considering what sanction to impose.
