The Edo State Police Command has directed all candidates in the August 16 House of Representatives and Senatorial by-elections to sign a Peace Accord on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Moses Yamu said in a statement on Wednesday that the initiative is a proactive measure to guarantee a peaceful, secure, and credible voting process.
According to Yamu, the accord will foster mutual respect among contestants and signal to their supporters the need to avoid violence. Party chairmen have also been invited to the ceremony, scheduled for 12 p.m. on August 14 at the Police Command Headquarters in Benin City.
“The Peace Accord is aimed at fostering mutual respect among contestants, discouraging acts of violence, and ensuring that democratic principles are upheld before, during, and after the elections,” the statement read in part.
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika urged all parties to attend promptly, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a level playing field. He also warned against hate speech, vote-buying, and any acts that could undermine the credibility of the polls or disrupt peace in the state.
