I Didn’t Come to Nigeria for Money – Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has disclosed that he accepted a pay cut to take charge of Nigeria’s national team, insisting his decision was driven by belief in the team’s potential rather than financial gain.

“When I came to Nigeria, I didn’t come here because of money. I was earning more in my last job,” Chelle told journalist Osasu Obayiuwana. “This is a very big team and I want to prove something, to achieve something. I came here for the challenge. Nothing has changed about that.”

Chelle and his players are currently under pressure as they fight to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria host Rwanda in Uyo next month before facing South Africa in a decisive clash.

Despite the scrutiny and speculation over his future, Chelle says he remains unfazed.

“I know quite well that I can be fired after one match. This is the life in football,” he admitted. “But if they decide to do that, they must be prepared to pay up the remainder of my contract.”
