Six Dead, 10 Missing After Bridge Collapse in China

At least six people have been confirmed dead and 10 others remain missing after part of a bridge under construction collapsed Friday in northwest China, state media reported.

Footage aired by state broadcaster CCTV showed the middle section of the bridge’s arch suddenly giving way, plunging into the Yellow River below. Xinhua News Agency attributed the collapse to a steel cable failure.

According to People’s Daily, 15 workers and a project manager were on-site when the accident occurred. Initial reports placed the death toll at seven before officials revised it to six.

The bridge, part of the Sichuan-Qinghai Railway, is described as the world’s largest-span double-track continuous steel truss arch bridge. It is also China’s first railway steel truss arch bridge across the Yellow River, the country’s second-longest river.

Images released by state media showed the partially built bridge with its central section missing, flanked by scaffolding towers and cranes. Hundreds of emergency personnel have been deployed for rescue operations, Xinhua reported.

Industrial accidents remain relatively frequent in China, where enforcement of safety standards is often weak. In December 2024, 13 people went missing after a cave-in at a railway construction site in Shenzhen, with no survivors reported.
