BREAKING : Six More Confirmed Dead in Afriland Towers Fire

At least six additional fatalities have been confirmed following the fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial complex on Broad Street, Lagos Island.

The victims were employees of United Capital, an investment and financial services firm that occupied the building’s 3rd and 4th floors. The announcement comes just hours after the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) confirmed that four of its staff also died in the blaze, bringing the total death toll to 10.

The fire reportedly broke out in the inverter room located in the basement around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, filling the building with thick smoke and causing panic among occupants. Eyewitnesses described people attempting to escape through windows as firefighters battled the flames.

Emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, rescued at least nine individuals from the premises. Five were successfully revived, while four remained unconscious.

In a statement released Thursday morning, United Capital expressed deep sorrow over the loss of its staff:

“It is with profound grief that the Management and Staff of United Capital Plc announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues, following the tragic fire at Afriland Towers on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones, and will provide every support possible during this difficult time.”

The company also confirmed that plans are underway for a memorial service in honour of the deceased.

Although emergency teams have not yet released an official casualty figure, internal sources have acknowledged that “not everyone made it out alive.” Efforts to reach the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) for further comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
