‘Obvious Choice’ – Rene Meulensteen Tips Michael Carrick to Replace Amorim at Man United

Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant, Rene Meulensteen, has backed ex-Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick as the “obvious option” to succeed Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

Amorim is under increasing pressure after a disappointing first ten months in charge, having taken over from Erik ten Hag last November. While United were 14th when Ten Hag was dismissed, results have worsened under Amorim, leaving his future in doubt.

Speaking to BetVictor, Meulensteen suggested Amorim could be dismissed before Christmas if performances do not improve.

“Could Ruben Amorim be gone before Christmas? Absolutely, he could well be,” Meulensteen said. “If he keeps being as stubborn as he is and the results don’t improve, then the club has no choice but to make a decision. How long can you keep moving in the wrong direction? Maybe you get the odd win, like the last-minute penalty against Burnley, but that’s not enough.”

Meulensteen added that Amorim’s approach could see him “heading straight for the exit” and argued that Carrick would be a natural replacement.

“Michael still knows quite a few players from his time at the club, he understands what Manchester United is about, and he knows what’s expected. With his insight and common-sense approach, I think he could well be the man to turn things around,” Meulensteen said.
