Nigeria’s passport production system has been upgraded to global standards, now capable of processing up to 5,000 passports daily.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed this during an inspection of the new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the Nigeria Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja, according to TVC News.
He explained that the reform, part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, has eliminated backlogs and long delays, ensuring that approved passports are now available for collection within 24 hours.
“The era of backlogs and manual personalisation is over. Nigerians can now expect faster, more reliable service as we strengthen the integrity of our travel documents,” Tunji-Ojo said.
With this development, Nigeria joins countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and India in adopting advanced passport systems that guarantee speed, transparency, and international authentication.
The Minister praised the efforts of key officials, including the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, noting that the project was delivered through a partnership with IRIS Smart Technologies Ltd., without direct government funding.
He added that the system upgrade has boosted production capacity from 250–300 booklets per machine daily to between 4,500 and 5,000, describing the milestone as one of the most significant achievements in the 62-year history of Nigeria’s Immigration Service.
