Jose Mourinho: Joining Fenerbahce Was a Mistake

Jose Mourinho has admitted that his decision to join Turkish giants Fenerbahce was a mistake.

The 62-year-old coach was dismissed by the club last month after failing to secure Champions League qualification. His departure quickly sparked speculation about his future, with Benfica strongly linked. On Thursday, the Portuguese side officially confirmed his appointment, announcing a contract that runs until the end of the 2026–27 season.

Speaking at his unveiling, Mourinho reflected on his brief time in Turkey: “My career has been rich, I’ve coached in different countries. I made the wrong choice, but I have no regrets. I made a mistake going to Fenerbahce, but I gave everything until the last day. Coaching Benfica is returning to my level.”

Looking ahead, he expressed belief in Benfica’s ability to challenge for the league title: “I truly believe Benfica has everything it takes to win the championship. They’ve dropped points, and we may drop more, but we’re starting from scratch. This team has the potential to be champions. It’s not a promise, but a conviction.”
