The Lagos State Government has explained the reasons behind the arrest of Nollywood actress Sarah Martins by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC/KAI), stating that she was carrying out unauthorised activities on public infrastructure.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 17, by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, the government clarified that Martins’ “charitable cooking” on a road median in Lekki Phase 1 violated existing environmental and sanitation laws.
According to the statement:
“The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources wishes to address a recent incident in the Admiralty area of Lekki Phase 1, where an individual was apprehended by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC/KAI) for engaging in unauthorised activities on public infrastructure.
The individual claimed to be conducting charitable cooking activities on the road median, which contravenes the state’s environmental and sanitation regulations. While the government appreciates the spirit of philanthropy, such acts must align with established laws to ensure safety, environmental protection, and urban order.”
Wahab reaffirmed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment across Lagos.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains committed to fostering a clean, sustainable, and livable Lagos for all. Unauthorized use of public spaces, such as road medians, for personal or commercial purposes poses serious risks—damaging infrastructure, creating health hazards, and obstructing traffic.
Enforcement actions, including the arrest and removal of equipment in this case, form part of the #KeepLagosClean and #ZeroToleranceLagos campaigns aimed at protecting the city’s aesthetics and functionality.”
The Commissioner encouraged residents to use designated areas or seek official approvals for public activities to avoid sanctions.
“We urge residents and organizations engaging in charitable initiatives to collaborate with relevant agencies for proper guidance. Such cooperation will amplify their positive impact while safeguarding shared urban spaces,” the statement concluded.
