Marcus Rashford has hinted that Manchester United’s “inconsistent environment” played a key role in his struggles to maintain top form during his time at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old forward, who has made an impressive start at his new club Barcelona with three goals and five assists in 10 appearances, spoke candidly ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier against Latvia on Tuesday.
Rashford’s resurgence has earned him a regular spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, and when asked by ITV about Tuchel’s view that consistency could elevate him to world-class status, the striker appeared to reflect on his turbulent years at United.
“For sure, consistency is a massive part of it,” Rashford said. “I feel like I’ve been in an inconsistent environment for a very long time, so it’s even more difficult to be consistent.”
He continued, “I completely agree that consistency is what I need to bring into my game. I want to be at my best — not sometimes, but as often as possible.”
Rashford went on to emphasize the importance of stability in achieving peak performance:
“When people talk about consistency, in order to be consistent — not just in sport, but in anything — you need consistent variables in your life and in how you train. We’ve had so many changes throughout my career, but I’m focused on moving forward and improving. When I’m at my best, I really enjoy everything about the sport.”
The comments are widely seen as a subtle criticism of Manchester United’s instability over the past several seasons, marked by frequent managerial changes and shifting tactical approaches.
