Plateau APC Challenges Mutfwang to Name Those Urging Him to Defect from PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to reveal the identities of those allegedly pressuring him to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC.

Governor Mutfwang had recently told guests at an event held in the Government House Banquet Hall, Jos, that several APC members had approached him, urging him to join their party.

He, however, maintained that only divine guidance and the will of the people who elected him could influence such a move.

“It’s true that they’re putting pressure on me, but I’ve told them that only two authorities can direct me to switch parties — the God of heaven and you, the people,” Mutfwang stated.

He added that many APC members secretly wished for his defection.

“The truth is that 60 to 70 per cent of APC members in this state would be happy to have us join them. They only pretend otherwise because they know I won’t,” he said.

Reacting on Monday in Jos, the APC’s acting publicity secretary, Shittu Bamaiyi, dismissed Mutfwang’s remarks as “self-denial”, accusing the governor of trying to distract the public from his administration’s shortcomings.

Bamaiyi argued that if the governor had truly performed well, there would be no conversation about defection or political realignment.

“If he truly has the interest of his supporters and the state at heart, he should boldly name those putting him under pressure and explain why,” Bamaiyi said.

He further added,

“Whatever the situation, it reflects poorly on a sitting governor when the opposition rejects his entry — even when that party’s aim is to win future elections.”
