After over a decade of speculation, British YouTubers Dan Howell and Phil Lester have officially confirmed that they’ve been in a relationship since 2009.
In a joint video on their YouTube channel, Dan revealed, “We fell into it hard and fast in 2009. It all happened so quickly that we never even labeled it. We just ended up living together — and here we are.”
Phil added, “We’re partners in everything. And no, it’s not always perfect. Don’t think we’re some ideal version of human relationships,” according to Daily Mail.
Dan opened up about why they kept their relationship private for so long, explaining that he was struggling with his identity at the time. “I was so deep in the closet. I felt we had to hide the relationship because I was still hiding who I was from my friends, family, and even myself,” he said.
Phil said he understood Dan’s decision, noting that he wanted to give him space to come to terms with his identity.
Although both creators publicly came out in 2019, they chose to keep their relationship private to maintain their professional image. “We wanted people to see us as a comedy duo, not just as a couple,” Dan explained. “There’s still a lot of homophobia out there, and some straight guys might not have watched us if they knew.”
The duo also shared their thoughts on steering clear of “couple content” online, with Dan calling it “a dystopian nightmare where personal relationships become public entertainment.”
