Why Are Criminals the Priority of the State? – Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour Questions Presidential Pardon Granted to 70 Convicted Drug Lords

Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV), has criticized the federal government’s decision to grant a presidential pardon to 70 convicted drug lords.

Last week, the presidency announced the release of 175 convicted criminals through presidential clemency—an action that has drawn widespread outrage.

Reacting via his X handle, Rhodes-Vivour condemned the decision, stating that drug trafficking has devastated the lives of countless young people in Lagos and across Nigeria. He questioned how such notorious figures could secure presidential pardon, suggesting that powerful political connections may have influenced the decision.

His post reads:

“The drug crisis ravaging the youths of Lagos is a tragedy actively tearing families apart and wasting the future of our young people. Those recently granted presidential pardons were not innocent victims or mere users—they were drug pushers and dealers profiting from the misery of our people.

How is it that those fueling this drug epidemic have such powerful connections to the president or the presidency to secure one-third of the presidential pardons? Why are these particular criminals the priority of the state?”
