Wike dismisses claims of 2027 presidential ambition

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has refuted reports suggesting that he is secretly nursing a presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 elections, describing the claims as “another lie from idle minds.”

In a statement released on Saturday, October 18, by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike debunked speculations that leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were urging him to run for president.

“The claim is another lie from idle minds who have nothing meaningful to contribute to the progress of the country,” the statement read.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, reiterated his unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu and affirmed that he remains committed to backing the president’s re-election bid.

“The Minister has made his position clear regarding the 2027 presidential election — he stands firmly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Olayinka emphasized.

He added, “Wike does not operate in secrecy. He says what he means and means what he says. It is unfortunate that those seeking to discredit him have resorted to such childish tactics. They clearly need better thinkers on their team.”

Clarifying reports of an alleged PDP strategy meeting, Olayinka explained that the only meeting held on August 20, 2025, involved southern PDP stakeholders and had nothing to do with any presidential agenda.

“The meeting on August 20, 2025, was attended by PDP stakeholders from the southern region to discuss the planned Lagos meeting of August 21, 2025, organized by certain individuals seeking to rubber-stamp decisions on zoning party positions already allocated to the South,” Olayinka clarified.
