Canadian PM Carney Visits Kyiv for Ukrainian Independence Day

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to join celebrations marking Ukraine’s Independence Day, amid renewed international efforts to end the ongoing war with Russia.

“On this Ukrainian Independence Day, and at this critical moment in their nation’s history, Canada is stepping up our support and our efforts towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” Carney wrote on X shortly after landing in the capital.

According to Canadian broadcaster CBC, Carney was invited as a “special guest” to the commemorations. In a video posted on his X account, he reaffirmed Ottawa’s commitment:
“Canada’s support for Ukraine is unwavering. We stand with you in defending your sovereignty and in realizing your vision for the future of your country.”

His trip comes as Russian forces continue to make slow but steady advances in the three-year-old conflict. On Saturday, Moscow announced the capture of two villages in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region.

Meanwhile, hopes for a direct summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appear to be fading, despite US President Donald Trump’s push for such talks as a pathway to peace.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa recently joined other world leaders urging dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv.

Carney’s presence in Kyiv underscores Canada’s active role in supporting Ukraine at a time when diplomatic and military dynamics remain uncertain.
