Tragedy struck Amakpu Okuku community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State on Friday after a middle-aged man, identified simply as Odomma, reportedly took his own life.
The father of four, who earned a living selling water in jerry cans and buckets, was found hanging inside an uncompleted building near his home early in the morning. Residents said he had long battled severe financial hardship that left him unable to provide for his family.
Community members recalled that Odomma had previously threatened to end his life, lamenting neglect from his wife and children after he could no longer meet the family’s needs.
“He told some of us three months ago that if things didn’t change, he would commit suicide,” said a resident, Ikenna. “We advised him to seek help from the village head, but sadly, he chose this path. He was hardworking, but the situation broke him.”
Eyewitnesses said many villagers rushed to the scene, some recording the tragic sight on their phones.
Odomma, well known in the area for his affordable water supply business, was described as dedicated but visibly depressed in recent months.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Imo State, Henry Okoye, said he was yet to receive full details. “Please give me some minutes to confirm from the DPO of Owerri West Local Government Area,” he told our correspondent. Subsequent attempts to reach him were unsuccessful as his line was switched off.
Further updates are expected.
