ADC Lawmaker Predicts Opposition Coalition Will Collapse by September

Leke Abejide, the only lawmaker in the House of Representatives elected on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform, has predicted that the opposition coalition formed around the party will disintegrate by September.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, Abejide said the coalition’s inability to secure a single seat in the August 16 by-elections marked the beginning of its downfall.

“The coalition collapsed last Saturday. Across the country, they could not win even one seat. That was the beginning of the end. By early next month, it will collapse completely,” he declared.

The Kogi lawmaker, who represents Yagba East/Yagba West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency, dismissed attempts to “hijack” the ADC, stressing that he remains the true custodian of the party.

“I didn’t found the party, but I am the one who kept it alive. I have never defected to a big party. I have contested all my elections on the ADC platform and even brought others into the National and State Assemblies,” Abejide said.

He argued that most of the coalition’s key figures have no real ties to the ADC, noting that while former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola recently joined, neither holds an official leadership role.

In July, the coalition adopted the ADC as its political platform ahead of the 2027 elections, naming Mark as interim chairman and Aregbesola as national secretary. Its membership also includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Dino Melaye, former Minister of Sports Solomon Dalong, ex-Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam, and publisher Dele Momodu.

Abejide, however, has repeatedly dismissed the group as “a gathering of selfish politicians” with no genuine plan for Nigeria, describing their ambitions under the ADC as “a mere daydream.”
