Socio-political activist Austin Okai has described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as the biggest threats to President Bola Tinubu’s bid for reelection in 2027.
Okai, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives candidate for Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency, argued that former President Goodluck Jonathan poses no challenge since he is unlikely to contest.
In an interview with DAILY POST, Okai urged both the PDP and African Democratic Congress (ADC) to focus on 2031, noting that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) enjoys structural and financial advantages ahead of 2027.
He pointed out that several PDP governors and key stakeholders have already aligned with Tinubu, weakening the party’s chances of mounting a strong opposition in the next election cycle. According to him, a divided opposition would only benefit the APC.
Okai further noted that while Atiku remains politically relevant, Peter Obi’s growing national appeal — particularly in Northern Nigeria — positions him as Tinubu’s most formidable rival.
“The major threat to APC today is Obi, especially if Jonathan is not running. Atiku is also a factor, but if opposition forces remain divided, Tinubu will retain a clear advantage,” Okai said.
He also commended Tinubu’s administration for performing better on security than that of his predecessor, late former President Muhammadu Buhari, while cautioning that unity among opposition parties remains critical to challenging APC’s dominance.
