Police Arrest Doctor Over Woman’s Death During Caesarean Section in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a medical doctor in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman, Susan Omoye-Okporan, who passed away during a caesarean section at a private hospital in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area.

Confirming the development in a statement on Friday, August 22, 2025, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, said detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“I can confirm the arrest of the doctor, and the command’s detectives are investigating the matter,” Yamu stated.

Reports indicate that the caesarean section was carried out on August 2, 2025. While the baby survived, the mother reportedly developed complications and died shortly after the procedure.

The deceased’s family accused the doctor of gross negligence, alleging that careless handling during the operation led to her death. A family source told Punch that they were prepared to pursue the matter to the highest level.

Findings at the command headquarters in Benin revealed that the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has since taken over the case. An autopsy has been conducted, and the results are awaiting review by police medical experts to determine further action.
