Trump Ends Secret Service Protection for Kamala Harris

Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer receive Secret Service protection after President Donald Trump revoked an extension previously granted by former President Joe Biden, according to a letter obtained by CNN.

The memo, dated Thursday and addressed to the Secretary of Homeland Security, reads:
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”

By law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of security detail after leaving office. Harris’s coverage expired on July 21, but Biden had quietly extended her protection for an additional year.

With the revocation, Harris—who is preparing for a multi-city book tour promoting her memoir 107 Days—will lose not only her protective agents but also access to critical intelligence on potential threats, including monitoring of digital communications and in-person risks, sources familiar with her security detail confirmed. Federal protection for her Los Angeles residence will also cease.

Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, said in a statement: “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

Her husband, Doug Emhoff, had already lost his protective detail on July 21, in line with federal rules governing spouses of former vice presidents.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism. California Governor Gavin Newsom, briefed on the change Thursday night, called the move “erratic and vindictive.” His spokesperson, Bob Salladay, added: “The safety of our public officials should never be subject to political impulses.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also condemned the action, calling it “another act of political retaliation” that puts Harris at risk. She vowed to work with state officials to ensure Harris’s safety in Los Angeles.

Neither the White House nor the Secret Service has commented on the development. The move comes as Harris re-enters public life, raising questions about the financial and logistical burden of arranging equivalent private security, which could cost millions annually.
