Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes All-Time Top Scorer in World Cup Qualifiers

Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved yet another historic milestone, becoming the all-time top scorer in FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

The 40-year-old superstar netted twice against Hungary on Tuesday, taking his tally to 41 goals in World Cup qualifiers and surpassing Guatemalan legend Carlos Ruiz, who previously held the record with 39 goals scored between 1998 and 2016.

Ronaldo first equalised for Portugal in the 22nd minute after connecting with a cross from Nelson Semedo. He then struck again before halftime, calmly finishing off a Nuno Mendes assist to give Portugal a 2–1 lead.

However, Hungary’s Dominik Szoboszlai scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser, forcing a 2–2 draw and delaying Portugal’s automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Already the world’s all-time leading international goalscorer with 143 goals, Ronaldo’s latest achievement underscores his extraordinary longevity and determination. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has reaffirmed his goal of appearing in what would be a record sixth World Cup, continuing to prove why he remains one of football’s greatest ever players.
