Spanish police have arrested two suspects — including a housemaid employed by former Real Madrid star Iker Casillas — for allegedly stealing five luxury watches valued at £175,000 from his home in Madrid.
According to reports, the housekeeper is accused of swapping Casillas’ original designer timepieces with cheap imitations in an attempt to deceive the football icon.
Local media revealed that the second suspect works as a security guard at the upscale residential estate where the 44-year-old former goalkeeper resides. Casillas reportedly became suspicious after noticing discrepancies in his prized watch collection — one of his favorite hobbies — and alerted police, who subsequently set a trap that led to the suspects’ arrest.
Spanish TV program El Programa de Ana Rosa reported:
> “Police have already handed the suspects over to the courts. They intended to dismantle the watches and sell them for parts. Iker is shocked by the betrayal of people he deeply trusted.”
A local outlet, Pozuelo IN, which covers Casillas’ affluent neighborhood of Pozuelo de Alarcón, confirmed that the pair meticulously planned the theft to avoid suspicion. The stolen watches reportedly included gold Rolex models worth more than €50,000 (£43,500) each, though authorities believe the total value may be significantly higher.
Investigators found fragments of dismantled watches and parts matching Casillas’ collection in the suspects’ home, making the items difficult to trace.
Casillas, who stored his watches across several rooms without a detailed inventory, is known for his passion for luxury timepieces and has even collaborated with high-end brands. Upon discovering the counterfeits, he quietly filed a police complaint, prompting a discreet investigation that confirmed the housekeeper’s involvement.
Police have also taken statements from Casillas and his ex-wife, journalist Sara Carbonero, as part of the ongoing case.
Widely regarded as one of football’s greatest goalkeepers, Iker Casillas made 510 appearances for Real Madrid during his 16-year career before joining FC Porto. He retired from professional football in August 2020, a year after suffering a heart attack during training with the Portuguese club.
