JUST IN: Dangote Begins Expansion of Refinery to 1.4 Million Barrels Per Day

The Dangote Refinery has announced plans to expand its processing capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd, a move that will make it the largest refinery in the world.

President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, made the announcement during a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday. He was joined by Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman of First Bank and a close associate.

“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day,” Dangote said. “Once completed, this will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar Refinery.”

According to him, construction work on the expansion will begin immediately, with an estimated 65,000 workers required—85 percent of whom will be Nigerians.

Dangote also revealed that the refinery’s power generation capacity would be doubled from 500MW to 1,000MW. In addition, the facility will begin producing Euro 6 standard fuels, an upgrade from the current Euro 5 specification.

He further disclosed that the refinery would be listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2026, giving Nigerians the chance to become shareholders.

Dangote expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support, adding that the expansion project is expected to be completed within three years.
