‘Nigeria deserves elections where losers will congratulate winners’ – INEC Chairman Amupitan says

The newly confirmed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has emphasized the need for credible elections in Nigeria—ones where losers can genuinely congratulate winners.

Amupitan made the remark on Thursday during his Senate screening, shortly before his confirmation as INEC chairman.

He stated that he plans to review the Electoral Act to enhance transparency and strengthen the integrity of the electoral process.

The law professor noted that inconsistencies in Nigeria’s election timelines need to be addressed to build public trust and confidence in the system.

“We must ensure that elections are credible enough for the loser to walk up to the winner and say, ‘You won fairly and well,’” Amupitan said. “It’s just like a judge sentencing someone, and the convict says, ‘Well done, I believe I’ve received justice.’”

The Senate confirmed Amupitan after over two hours of rigorous questioning on Thursday.
