Sowore Released from Kuje Prison After Four-Day Detention

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has been released from Kuje Prison, Abuja, after meeting his bail conditions.

Sowore confirmed his release in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, writing:
"HAPPENING NOW: Leaving Kuje Prison in Abuja after being detained there illegally for four days by @officialABAT illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun. #FreeNnamdiKanuNow."

The activist was arrested alongside Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu; Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; and 11 other protesters during a #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration in Abuja last week.

The 14 defendants were arraigned last Friday before Magistrate Abubakar Sai’id at a Magistrate Court in Kuje on charges of unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace. Magistrate Sai’id granted each defendant bail of ₦500,000, with conditions including presenting a verified National Identification Number, submitting a three-year tax clearance certificate, and depositing their passports.

After fulfilling these requirements, Sowore and the other defendants were released from Kuje Prison on Monday.

Sowore’s arrest last Thursday came shortly after he attended a court proceeding involving IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
