US Embassy Issues Security Alert Ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest in Abuja

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security advisory to its citizens ahead of a planned protest under the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, expected to take place on Monday, October 20, in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.

The demonstration—announced by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on October 9—is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. at Eagle Square and proceed toward the Aso Rock Presidential Villa. Sowore described it as a “historic and peaceful protest” aimed at demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu has been in detention since June 2021, following his controversial extradition from Kenya, and is currently facing terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In a statement published on its website on Friday, the U.S. Embassy warned that the protest could cause roadblocks, traffic disruptions, and possible confrontations between police and demonstrators, which may escalate into violence.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that the Free Nnamdi Kanu Now protest has called for peaceful demonstrations on Monday, October 20th, 2025, in Abuja. There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and clashes between police and protesters that could turn violent around Eagle Square and the Central Business District,” the statement read.

The Embassy advised Americans to avoid the protest zones, limit movement across the city, and take safety precautions throughout the day. It also urged parents to keep their children at home and advised that domestic workers who commute from outside Abuja should not report to work.

“The Embassy recommends children in Abuja stay home from school and domestic staff who travel from outside the city remain at home as well,” it added.

U.S. citizens were further advised to stay away from large gatherings, remain vigilant in public areas such as shopping malls, cinemas, and places of worship, and to keep communication devices fully charged in case of emergencies.

“Avoid areas where protests are taking place. Avoid crowds. Exercise caution if unexpectedly caught near large gatherings or demonstrations,” the Embassy warned.

The advisory also encouraged Americans to monitor local news, review personal security plans, and maintain a low profile throughout the period.
