Two members of Australia’s women’s cricket team were allegedly assaulted by a motorcyclist in Indore, India, on Thursday morning.
The incident reportedly occurred while the players were walking to a cafĂ©, just a day after Australia’s victory over England in Indore.
“Cricket Australia can confirm that two members of the Australian Women’s team were approached and inappropriately touched by a motorcyclist while walking to a cafĂ© in Indore,” the board said in a statement. “The matter was immediately reported to local police by team security, and authorities are now handling the case.”
Rajesh Dandotiya, Additional District Commissioner of Police, Indore Crime Branch, confirmed that a suspect had been arrested.
“The Australian team’s security manager lodged a complaint about the inappropriate behaviour toward two players. Following an intensive operation, we arrested the suspect, Aqeel, who has a prior criminal record. The incident took place around 11 a.m. on October 23 as the players were walking from Hotel Radisson to a nearby cafĂ©,” Dandotiya said.
He added that the Indore Police Commissionerate met with representatives from the BCCI and the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) to review and strengthen security measures.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia condemned the attack, calling it “extremely deplorable,” and pledged to “revisit safety protocols if necessary.”
The MPCA also issued a statement expressing shock and regret:
“We are deeply pained and shocked by this disturbing incident of misconduct involving two players from the Australian Women’s Cricket Team in Indore. No woman should ever endure such trauma. Our thoughts and support are with those affected.
It is heartbreaking that the reckless act of one individual has tarnished the city’s image as a safe and welcoming venue. We sincerely apologize to the Australian Women’s team for this distressing experience and commend the players for their courage and professionalism in continuing to compete with pride and determination.”
