Tyler Perry Donates $100,000 to Bishop Marvin Winans Following Backlash Over Church Fundraising Incident

Tyler Perry has contributed $100,000 to Bishop Marvin WinansPerfecting Church in Detroit, days after footage from a fundraising event went viral and drew criticism.

The incident occurred on October 19 during the church’s “Day of Giving,” when Bishop Winans asked members of the congregation to donate. Longtime member Roberta McCoy offered $1,235 “in faith,” but was publicly corrected by Winans.

“That’s only $1,200,” he told her. When McCoy offered to pay the remaining $800 later, Winans responded, “Well, that ain’t what I asked you to do.”

The clip sparked widespread backlash online, with many accusing the pastor of embarrassing a devoted member over her donation.

Both McCoy and Winans later addressed the incident. McCoy clarified, “He absolutely did not rebuke me. There was a correction because the pastor gave instruction on the lines to get into.” Winans explained he was addressing donors “by increments” to maintain the flow of the service and later issued a personal apology to McCoy.

Perry, known for his support of churches and community initiatives, made the $100,000 donation to back the church and its longtime building project at 7 Mile and Woodward, which has been ongoing since 2002.

While some fans criticized Perry online for seemingly endorsing Winans’ behavior, the filmmaker appears unbothered by the backlash.
