Yemi Alade reveals how lying about her age for three years led to depression

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Yemi Alade has opened up about a period in her life when lying about her age caused her emotional distress and led to depression.

In an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the award-winning artiste shared that she spent three years telling people she was 22, only to later discover she was actually 25.

“There was a time someone asked me my age, and for about three years I kept saying 22. Then one day I did the math and realised I was already 25,” she recounted.

Yemi said the realisation hit her hard and triggered a brief period of depression.

“I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t process it. It was mental — for three years, I didn’t know my age,” she confessed.

The singer described the experience as one of the strangest moments of her life, adding that it taught her a powerful lesson about honesty, self-acceptance, and self-awareness.
